The Balcony Scene

Compare and contrast the two clips of Romeo and Juliet, the balcony scene. What are the main differences between the 1968 and 1996 interpretations of Shakespeare's text?

Respond to this no later than Sunday, May 9, 2010.

  1. The first difference I noticed was in the new movie, Romeo clumsily sneaks into the Capulet property where in the old version, Romeo is silent and stealthy. Also, Juliet was not on the balcony in the 1996 version, although she was in the 1968 production, instead she came to where Romeo was hiding via elavator. The last and most obvious difference was in the new movie, Romeo and Juliet's meeting was in a swimming pool, but, in the old movie, they met on Juliet's balcony.
Some similarities were, the dialouge, Romeo not revealing himself to Juliet until after her monologue, and Romeo and Juliet's promise to reunite.

  2. There are many differences in the comparison of the new and older versions. One difference is that the old one, Romeo sneaks through the garden while in the new one he goes through the pool area. Another difference is that Juliet actually comes downstairs in the elevator rather than Romeo going up the balcony and they both fall in the pool. The last thing is the guard actually comes outside and in the older version, Juilet runs back and forth so nobody sees them. Some similarities were the nurse calling Juliet, the script seemed the same in both, and the basic scenes and the storylines all stayed true to the script as well.

  3. The first difference i noticed was that there are automobiles in the new version. The second difference i noticed was that the talked in the pool instead of on the balcony in the older movie. Also in the newer version they showed the nurse. In the new version Romeo asks Juliet to marry him. Also the guards almost catch Romeo in the new version. The biggest difference of all that i noticed was that the older version didn't contain any words or dialogue.

  4. The two movies had very different balcony scenes, though the newer one was more of a pool scene. The 1996 Romeo struggled through the pool area, knocking everything over, while the 1968 Romeo had no trouble getting to Juliet's balcony. Both Romeos were creepin' on Juliet, but the 1996 Romeo took it to a whole new level causing him and Juliet to fall into the pool. In both movies the nurse called for Juliet, but in the 1996 movie she showed herself on the balcony. The two movies kept to the script quite well. At the end of the 1996 balcony scene, Juliet gives Romeo a necklace. This did not happen in the 1968 movie.

  5. The main difference between the two movies is that the 1996 version the "balcony" scene isn't a balcony at all, its a pool. Whereas the 1968 version, the scene actually takes place on a balcony. In the 1996 version Juliet comes down to the pool from an elevator, and Romeo sees nurse through a window. In the 1968 version, Romeo sneaks in via the Capulet's orchard and comes to Juliet. Both versions are the same because both Romeo's ask their Juliet's to marry them, Nurse calls for Juliet, and they both were very close to the original script. Also, in the 1996 version Juliet gives Romeo a necklace, and the guard actually comes out to se what was going on.

  6. The first difference that I recognized was that there were cars in the newer version and there were no automobiles in the older version. I also saw that there is a swimming pool in the newer version and just a balcony in the older version. There were guards and security cameras in the newer version and not in the 1968 version.
They are similar in the way they speak and in how Romeo asks Juliet to marry him. They are also similar because the Nurse appears in both versions and asks for Juliet.

  7. The big difference that I noticed in the two movies were that the 1996 balcony scene is in in a pool and not on a real balcony, but in the other, it is on a balcony. Also in the 1996 version the guard actually came out to see what was going on with Juliet. Some similarities were, in both movies Romeo had some trouble getting to Juleit's "balcony". Also in both Romeo asks for Juliet to marry him.

  8. The main difference between the 1968 and the 1996 version was that the scene was shot in a pool instead of a balcony.Another difference was that there were cars in the96 version and none in the 68.Some similarities would be that the speak the same. Also romeo asks juliet to marry in both clips.

  9. Obviously in the newer version, the "Balcony Scene" was in a pool, not a balcony. Another difference is that there were cars in the newer version. There were also guards and secrurity cameras in the newer version. However, the texts were about the same. Romeo also asked Juliet to marry him in both newer and older versions.

  10. In the 1996 version, Romeo is more up front with revealing himself and he does it in a more confident way, meaning instead of Romeo sneaking through the tree he more of tackles Juliet into the pool. The second difference is when the guard comes out to check on Juliet. In the 1968 version they are alone the whole time. The third difference I noticed was that in the 1996 version the two seemed to be more relaxed with their encounter, where in the 1968 version Juliet is more worried about being caught.

  11. The first differnce i noticed was how Romeo snuck into the Capulet's property. In the older version Romeo is secret and quit whereas in the newer version Romeo makes loud noises and is easy to be identified. The "mood" in the older version is displayed as "dark and romantic" whereas the new version has "lights and security cameras." The chance of romeo being caught is more likely in the newer version. Also in the newer version the "security guard" comes outside to check on Juliet whereas the older version their privacy is not interrupted. Finally,in the older version romeo meets Juliet on the balcony unlike the newer version. The newer version displays their "meeting" near a pool and not on the balcony. Some similarities include the same script, and the nurse calls for Juliet in both versions.

  12. The first difference i noticed was his way of sneaking into the Capulets house, in the 19968 version he was really quiet and made sure no one noticed him, and in the 1996 version he was much more louder and was running into things. Another difference was the way of approaching Juliet, he scared the crap out of her in the newer version which made them fall into the pool. Also, they were much more affectionate in the newer version. The last thing i noticed was how there were guards and cars in the newer version, and in the older version there weren't cars invented and they didn't have cars back then.

  13. In the modern version the balcony scene takes place in a ppolgcompared to the older versoin where it happens on the balcony. In the older scene Romeo sneaks in to see Juliet, whereas in the newer one he makes loud noises and can be easily identified by the capulets. One last difference that i noticed was the two didn't seem to care if they got caught in the new one.

  14. The first difference is that the balcony scene in the 1996 version is in the pool. Another way it's different is when he goes to see JUliet. In the newer version he scares her and they fall into the pool and in the old version he just sneaks up on her.

  15. One similar part of the scene was that Juliet was indirectly talking to Romeo during the beginning. The first difference was that Romeo in the 1968 version never placed himself upon the blcony. While in the 1996 version thats where he entered. Romeo also makes himself noticed with the loud noises while in the 1968 version he talked to her with ease. The third difference is Romeo and Juliet in the 1996 version were talking in a pool rather than the balcony. The guard never entered the balcony in the 1968 version while in the 1996 version he came out to check about the noise. Lastly in the 1996 version Juliet gives Romeo her necklace, while in the 1968 version he recieved nothing of such kind.

  16. - Similarites
Romeo comes to the Capilet's Orchard after the party and both Romeo and Juliet have a monologue that evolves into Juliet hearing Romeo's passionate calls for Juliet. Also the nurse appears in both films.
    - Differences
in the 1996 version Romeo scares Juliet which they both fall into the pool. ( the '96 was moe of a bad pool party than a balcony scene) Also Juliet gives Roemo her necklace and there was never a guard in the 96 version. In the 68 version, Romeo infiltrates the Capulets house with no problem an was more traditional.
    - Conclusion
    I liked them both

  17. First difference i notice was that in the new verison the scene took place in a pool. And in the old verison it was on an balcony. In the new verison Romeo scares Juliet and they fall into the pool. In the older verison he kinda creeps on her and she comes out.
