Romeo and Juliet, Act 1 Scene 5

After viewing the clip from Zefferelli's 1968 version of the party scene, take a moment to watch Luhrmann's 1996 version. After watching, respond in a paragraph about how the two clips differed. Go beyond the setting differences - we've already discussed that. How does Luhrmann change the party? Is there any differences you can see in the interaction between the star-crossed lovers? What else did you notice?

**Pardon the German subtitles in the clip - it was the best one I found on YouTube.**

As always, your post must be done in complete sentences with your first name and last initial posted after your response.

  1. The first difference I noticed is that Romeo and Juliet do not meet on the dance floor, but through a fish tank. Also, the dance is a costume party in the new movie as apposed to a formal ball in the old movie. Also, in the new movie Romeo and Juliet kiss three seperate times unlike in the older movie in which only two kisses are exchanged. Lastly, the scene in which in Tybalt and Capulet argue is not included in the 1996 movie.

  2. There are many differences between the two clips. One of them is that Romeon and Juliet in the 1996 movie don't meet on the dance floor, but meet looking through a fish tank. The ball is different in terms of how they dress and the music. Romeo and Juliet kiss three times in the 1996 movie instead of two times in the older movie. The last difference that I saw was that Tybalt doesn't argue and complain about Romeo being a Montague.

  3. Basically, other than the setting and their appearances it stays pretty true to the book. Other than the fact that Romeo and Juliet meet through a fishtank. And in this vesion they move around alot more than they did in the older version. And this version does not include the scene with Tybalt.

  4. The 1996 movie is different from the older movie because in this version the Capulet's party is in a more modern fashion. They have fish tanks, it's a costume party with more updated music, where in the older movie everything was more formal. In this movie Romeo and Juliet meet when their eyes meet across a fish tank, but it also shows him watching her dance from behind the pillar. Also in this movie they kiss 3 times, and Tybalt and Capulet are not shown arguing.

  5. Luhrmann's version was much more modern than Zefferelli's 1968 version. The fish tank was never involved with the 1968 version and in the older version his eye was caught spying on her. Tybalt is not in the 1996 version where he tells on Romeo. In the 1968 version, Juliet was afraid of Romeo at first sight. In the 1996 version they seemed very much in love after a few seconds. In the older version the nurse was never involved with the situation, but in the newer version she pulled her out of the elevator. The elevator was not at all part of the 1968 version, they were more of sitting down. The clothes the two were wearing were different, because in the older version, the clothes were more proper. In the new version, the celebration was more of a costume party.

  6. In Luhrmann's version i noticed that Romeo and Juliet meet through a fish tanks instead if behind a pilar on the dance floor. Another difference is that the quarrel between Capulet and Tybalt is left out of the 1996. Lastly Romeo and Juliet kiss 3 times unlike the other movie or book where they kiss only twice

  9. This 1996 version is a little bit different than the one watched in class. We notice even though it is a more modern version it stays pretty close to the script but it does cut out the scene with Tybalt arguing. Romeo and Juliet also meet through a fish tank rather than on the dance floor although Romeo does follow get there to see her. We aslo notice there is more moving around and following each other than in the older one, and that there is an elevator included. There is also a difference in the party where it is a costum party while in the older film it was like a masked party. There is also many different scene differences such as there is a singer as well but regarding that there is nothing much else to compare with the two different clips.

  10. In the older version of the movie, Romeo and Juliet first see each other through a fish tank whereas in the older movie, Romeo is watching Juliet dance. In the old movie, Romeo and Juliet kiss in the corner or somewhere in the back of the room. In the new one, they first kiss inside the elevator. In the older movie, they are at a ball and the story goes along almost perfectly with the play. In the newer version, it is more of a costume party and it is a bit more modern in terms of setting and speech.

  11. In this version of the movie, the party looks to be that of a costume party, therefore giving everyone a mask. In this version, Romeo is more confrontational about their forst meeting. Rather than try and stay concealed he openly comes to her. The other difference I noticed was that rather than the touching of the hands, Luhrmann uses the fish tank as their gateway.

  12. I found a few differences in the two movies. In the newer movie, Romeo and Juliet meet through a fish tank instead of around a pillar on the ball room dance floor. They also kiss three times in the new movie compared to two in the old movie. There is a scene in the old movie when Tybalt sees Romeo, complains to his father like a princox. This scene doesn't exist in the new movie.

  13. Differences were contrasted between the two clips. First off, Romeo and Juliet meet through a fishing tank, making this seen not as romantic. The party was more modern and dress-up then the usual stsyle of the 1968 version. Romeo and Juliet also kiss in an elavator( thinking this will hide them). They kiss three times in the elevator. Lastly the nurse greets them as soon as they finish their last kiss. Finally, the scene of Tybalt and his unexpected encounter with Romeo does not happen in the 1996 version.

  14. Differences were contrasted between the two clips. First off, Romeo and Juliet meet through a fishing tank making this not as romantic. The ball wasn't as formal and serious as the 1968 version. This ball or "party" was a dres-up. Romeo and Juliet kiss in an elevator three times. After the third kiss the Nurse suddenly greets the two, grabbing Juliet. Finally, Tybalt's encounter with Romeo does not happen in contrast to the 1968 version.

  15. The first difference that was obvious was the way that they met, in the older version Romeo was practically spying on her and in the newer version they meet through a fish tank. In older version they kiss twice but they kiss three times in the newer version. They never showed them dancing on the dance floor or Tybalt ratting out Romeo to Capulet. In the older version the nurse doesn't have any interaction but in the newer version we see the nurse pulling Juliet out of the elevator, which is something not shown in the older version. As the scene itself, the older version was more like a formal event and the newer one shows it as a costume party. Also, in the older version they were dancing to a much more up beat song when Romeo was watching Juliet, but in the newer version we see her slow dancing with Paris.

  16. In the modern movie, Lady Capulet is following Juliet around and Juliet is trying to avoid her. Unlike in the older movie where they are left alone until the nurse disturbs them. In the older movie, the dancing is much different. And I think its weird that they have a fish tank that is looking directly into the bathrooms.

  17. In the modern day movie they meet through a fish tank. Instead of the dance floor. And in the modern day movie they kiss alot more. The dancing in the older movie looked more fancy and old. And in the modern day movie the dancing was more up paced and normal.

  18. In this movie it is a costume party instead of everyone having to wear a mask. The people at the party are ballroom dancing instead of whatever they were doing in the other movie. Romeo seemed to be more confident when introducing himself to Juliet. As a result they made out for much longer than in the first movie.
